About

Hi, I’m Bridget Barrett.

I’m a PhD student and Roy H. Park Fellow at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and a Graduate Research Fellow with the Center for Information, Technology and Public Life (CITAP).

I’m interested in new media, advertising technology, and democracy, informed by my prior professional career in digital advertising. I take up questions of platform power and influence with mixed-methods research including policy analysis, experiments, in-depth interviews, and network analysis. My academic work has been published in peer-reviewed journals (including Political Communication and Internet Policy Review) as well as in the popular press (including Slate and Lawfare).

My dissertation focuses on the industry of online campaign merchandise. I am studying how the industry works, people’s motivations for participating in it, and the technologies that mediate the relationships between buyers and sellers. I am scheduled to graduate in May, 2023.

You can keep up-to-date on my work by connecting with me on LinkedIn or following me on Twitter or Google Scholar.
